Are you thinking of escaping to a destination not too far from Camping Villasol during your holidays in Benidorm, or do you just fancy a stopover in a town worth visiting with your motorhome? We recommend a visit to Altea. Not only for how beautiful it is, but also for the amount of shops, restaurants and places that are highly recommended to visit once in a lifetime. Surely you want to know more, we propose a list of essential things to see in Altea.
Altea Old Town
In order to access the old town you will have to climb up a few stone steps to reach the flatter area where the Church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo is located. As you walk through its narrow streets you will find a great variety of restaurants, small houses with their respective balconies, shops of all kinds and magical corners where you can get lost knowing that you will be able to find your way around without the need to use your GPS when you see the church from above.
Lookout points
You can park in the lower part of the village and go up to the square where the church is located, you will come across two viewpoints, one is halfway up the hill, and the other is when you go up all the slopes and reach the top, where the old town is situated. This is the most famous viewpoint in Altea for its incredible views, both during the day and at night, of all the little houses of the town next to the bay.
Church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo
This is the most emblematic monument in Altea, not only because you can see it in any corner of the town due to its large size, but also because of its two characteristic blue and white domes, which to a certain extent mark the colours of each street and corner of the town.
Shopping in Altea
As you stroll through the narrow streets, you’ll find a variety of charming little shops, where you’ll be spoilt for choice with jewellery, clothing suitable for all ages, accessories and even pottery. It’s worth popping in and having a look around, not only because the sellers are very friendly and friendly people, but also because you can find complete jewellery that you wouldn’t find in the city. If you decide to visit Altea in summer, you can find a street market with several stalls in the church square.
Restaurants in the old town of Altea
If you have thought about trying Mediterranean gastronomy, you will notice that as you walk around the town or even in the square itself, you will find a large number of restaurants for all kinds of tastes and with the option of a terrace. Are you having trouble deciding? We recommend you try “In Bocca Al Lupo”, an Italian restaurant with great personality. If, on the other hand, you want a more vegan option, we suggest you try “Mamarosa”, a place with high quality homemade food. And finally, if you like strong, international flavours, we recommend you to go to the restaurant “Crown of India”, an establishment where everyone who has been there agrees that it is one of the best places to eat Indian food.
Charming corners
As you walk around Altea, you notice that almost all the streets and houses have the same theme with the play of blue and white colours, simulating that you are walking around Mykonos, Greece. However, you can also see the many potted green plants and flowers of different colours that make a beautiful contrast. It is not surprising that it is one of the most photogenic villages in the whole province of Alicante, as you realise that in every corner you pass you have an excuse to take a picture of how beautiful it is.
Altea Beaches
One of the advantages of living on the Costa Blanca is the good weather at any time of the year to be able to go to the beach, so if you feel like taking a dip and sunbathing, you have several beaches to escape and disconnect. If you don’t feel like taking the car and want to go to a beach near the town, we recommend you to go to La Roda, a beach that borders the whole town and whose combination of turquoise colours from the sea and white from the pebbles are in harmony with the most characteristic colours of the town.
