A caravan is a vehicle designed to be used as accommodation within a campsite or for free camping. It is equipped with everything you need for daily life, such as a kitchen, bathroom, beds, tables or seats. The key point is that it is towed by a vehicle, which is not the case with motorhomes that have their own engine.
In short, motorhomes are, as their name suggests, self-contained vehicles, while caravans need to be towed by a car. Now that you are clear on this issue, we want you to know more about the advantages and disadvantages of both options.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a caravan?
It is important that you are aware of both the advantages and disadvantages of a motorhome.
We will start by showing you the advantages of caravans:
Mobility. Caravans allow you to be more mobile when you go on holiday. Once you park the trailer in an authorised place, such as our campsite, you will have your car at your disposal to move around the area. You will be able to go sightseeing more easily than if you had a motorhome.
Durability. Motorhomes are like cars, they have a more or less long life, but they have an end. However, caravans are almost eternal. They require less maintenance, as they do not have an engine.
Price. The price of caravans is significantly lower than that of motorhomes. If you already have a vehicle, you will not have to invest such a high sum to enjoy all the advantages of having a mobile home.
As with everything in life, caravans also have some disadvantages, and these are the following:
Safety. Driving a caravan is not easy. You have to respect speed limits, which are 90 kilometres on motorways and 80 kilometres on dual carriageways. In addition, the vehicle’s stability is less, so you will need to take special care when the weather conditions are adverse. Bear in mind that it will take you longer to reach your destination than if you travel by car.
Practice. If you take the caravan from time to time, you may lack practice behind the wheel and not take into account all of the above. You may get distracted and perform an inappropriate manoeuvre.
Accessibility. When it comes to parking your vehicle together with the caravan, whether in a car park or on a campsite, the manoeuvre is not easy. This is why you need to be careful and require a certain amount of skill, as you are actually parking two vehicles at the same time.
Discomfort. Although we mentioned earlier that caravans allow you a certain degree of mobility, the truth is that having to set it up and dismantle it all the time can also cause you a certain degree of discomfort. The motorhome does not present this problem.

Stability. Motorhomes are more stable vehicles than caravans. For this reason they give you more options of movement. You will be able to enter roads that would be impossible with a caravan.
Mobility. Following on from the previous point, if you come across a bad road, the motorhome has greater mobility than the caravan. Manoeuvring is easier.
Additional trailer. Motorhomes allow you to fit an additional trailer, giving you more space to transport everything you need. This is something you can’t do with a caravan, as the car would not be stable enough to support two trailers.
Practicality. The motorhome is more practical, as you don’t have to have another vehicle to move around in. It will be enough to get you around throughout your holiday.
We now turn to the disadvantages of motorhomes, which they also have:
Space. A motorhome typically has less interior space than a caravan. Keep in mind that the driver’s cab and also the engine area reduce the square footage of the vehicle.
Maintenance. Motorhomes require more maintenance than caravans and vehicles. However, in all cases, they are subject to compulsory servicing.
Price. As mentioned above, the price of a motorhome is considerably higher than that of a caravan.
